A Work Capability Assessment claim runs on a handful of dates: when the waiting period for the health element ends, when the WCA50 must be back, when to start preparing for the assessment, when to ask about a slow decision and when the time to challenge it runs out. How each date is worked out
Every date comes from a rule in the regulations, from GOV.UK or from the form itself. Where a date is our own suggestion rather than a legal time limit, the tool says so.

Months are calendar months: a month from 15 March is 15 April, and where the next month has no matching day the date is the last day of that month, so a month from 31 January is 28 February (29 in a leap year). Working days are Monday to Friday; bank holidays are not taken out, which only makes a "post by" date earlier than it needs to be.
Where to send the WCA50 and what if you are late
Use the envelope that came with the form. There is no single national address, and the provider depends on where you live.
Where to send your WCA50 →If a date has already passed
- The WCA50 is late. Send it today and answer question 102, which asks why it is late. The DWP has to send a reminder and wait before it can treat you as capable of work. Our guide to a missed WCA50 deadline or appointment explains what counts as good cause or good reason.
- The month for a mandatory reconsideration has gone. A late request can still be accepted up to 12 months after the normal deadline if you explain why it is late. Start with our mandatory reconsideration guide.

Frequently asked questions
Until the date on the letter that came with the form, which is normally about 4 weeks after the letter. Use the envelope that came with the form: it needs no stamp. If you need more time, ask before the date and note who agreed it. If you leave the return date empty, the tool uses 4 weeks from the letter date and reminds you to check your own letter.
The DWP cannot treat you as capable of work straight away. It must send a reminder at least 3 weeks after the first request and then wait at least 1 more week (regulation 43 of the Universal Credit Regulations 2013 and regulation 18 of the ESA Regulations 2013). A good reason (Universal Credit) or good cause (ESA), such as your health, can also cover the delay. Send the form as soon as you can and answer question 102, which asks why it is late.
After a 3-month waiting period that begins on the first day you give the DWP medical evidence, normally your first fit note. If you are found to have LCWRA, the element can be included from the start of the next assessment period after those 3 months (regulation 28 of the Universal Credit Regulations 2013). Assessments often take longer than 3 months, so the waiting period has usually ended by the time the decision arrives.
There is no set time. For initial ESA assessments in March 2026, the DWP median from the assessment provider's recommendation to the decision was 16 weekdays, but the report has to be written and sent first, so many letters take longer. The tool gives you a date after which it is sensible to ask where your claim is. It is not a promise.
One month from the date of the decision. After that, the DWP can accept a late request up to 12 months after the normal deadline, but only if you explain why it is late and special circumstances stopped you asking in time. If the reconsideration does not change the decision, you have 1 month from the date the notice was sent to appeal to the tribunal. On ESA there is one exception: if the decision finds you do not have limited capability for work for the first time, or for the first time since you were last found to have it, and ESA could be paid while you appeal, you can appeal straight to the tribunal within 1 month of the decision instead, and only an appeal lets ESA be paid while you wait (DWP guidance ADM U7020). A second fit for work finding with no finding that you have limited capability for work in between, even on a new claim, needs a mandatory reconsideration first. So does a decision for not returning the form or for not attending, one made after New Style ESA has ended at the 365-day limit and one made when you claim JSA instead. Your decision letter says which route applies. Universal Credit decisions always need the mandatory reconsideration first.
