How Many Points Do You Need for ESA? The 15-Point Threshold Explained

Updated May 2026 - Based on current UK benefits rules

If you are applying for Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) or the Universal Credit health element, the single most important number you need to know is 15. That is how many points you need to score on the Work Capability Assessment (WCA) to be found to have Limited Capability for Work (LCW).

But how exactly are those points calculated? And what happens if you score less than 15 - or even 0? This guide breaks down everything you need to know about the ESA points system.

The 15-Point Threshold

The WCA scores you across 17 different activities - 10 physical and 7 mental/cognitive. Each activity has several "descriptors" worth different points. The DWP assessor picks the descriptor that best matches your limitations for each activity, and only the highest-scoring descriptor counts per activity.

Your points from ALL 17 activities are then added together. If your total reaches 15 or more, you are found to have Limited Capability for Work (LCW). If you score below 15, you are found "Fit for Work" - unless the substantial risk regulation applies.

How Points Work Per Activity

Each of the 17 activities has descriptors worth 0, 6, 9, or 15 points. Here is a simplified breakdown:

PointsWhat it meansExample
0No significant limitationCan remain at a work station without difficulty
6Moderate limitationCannot remain at a work station for more than an hour
9Significant limitationCannot remain at a work station for more than 30 minutes
15Severe limitation (Support Group level)Cannot remain at a work station at all / Cannot mobilise more than 50 metres

Common Point Combinations That Reach 15

You do not need to score highly on every activity. Many successful claims reach 15 through combinations like:

This is why it is crucial to describe your limitations across ALL 17 activities, not just the most obvious ones. Many claimants miss points on mental health activities because they focus only on physical limitations.

What If You Score 0 Points?

Being scored at 0 points does not necessarily mean you are fit for work. It often means the assessor did not understand your conditions or you did not describe your limitations in the right terms. Around 2 in 3 mandatory reconsiderations result in a changed decision, so if you score 0, you should challenge it.

The most common reasons for scoring 0 are:

The Support Group (LCWRA)

If you score 15 points through a single descriptor worth 15 points, you automatically qualify for the Support Group (Limited Capability for Work-Related Activity). You can also qualify through the substantial risk regulation even if your individual descriptors are lower.

The Support Group means higher payments and no requirement to attend work-focused interviews or training.

Points From Physical vs Mental Activities

Points from physical and mental activities are combined. Many claimants with physical conditions also score on mental activities due to depression, anxiety, medication side effects, or cognitive difficulties caused by chronic pain. Similarly, people with mental health conditions often score on physical activities due to medication side effects, psychomotor retardation, or the physical symptoms of anxiety.

Key tip: Do not leave any activity blank on your ESA50/UC50 form. Even if you think an activity does not apply to you, consider whether your conditions or medication might affect it. Every point counts towards the 15-point threshold.
