How to Qualify for ESA Support Group / LCWRA
The Support Group (for ESA) and LCWRA (for Universal Credit) provide the highest level of support: a higher rate of benefit and no work-related requirements. There are two routes to qualifying.
Route 1: Schedule 3 descriptors
Schedule 3 of the ESA Regulations lists specific descriptors that, if met, qualify you for LCWRA. Many of these correspond to the 15-point descriptors from the main WCA activities. For example:
- Cannot mobilise more than 50 metres
- Cannot move between seated positions without physical assistance
- Cannot raise either arm to top pocket height
- Cannot pick up a 0.5 litre carton of liquid
- Cannot convey a simple message
- Cannot learn a simple task
- Cannot cope with any change
- Social contact always precluded
- At least weekly episodes of lost consciousness
- At least monthly continence accidents
If you meet ANY ONE of these, you should be placed in the Support Group or LCWRA.
Route 2: Substantial risk
If there would be a "substantial risk" to your physical or mental health (or to other people) if you were found not to have LCWRA, you should be placed in the Support Group or LCWRA. This includes:
- Risk of self-harm or suicide
- Risk of significant deterioration of your condition
- Risk of harm to others
- Risk from the stress and anxiety of work-related requirements
Substantial risk is particularly important for mental health conditions where the stress of being found "fit for work" could trigger a crisis.
Financial difference
For ESA, the Support Group component is approximately 50 pounds per week on top of the basic allowance. For Universal Credit, the LCWRA element is approximately 430 pounds per month for existing claimants (or 217 pounds for new claimants from April 2026). The difference is significant.
How to argue for Support Group or LCWRA
On your ESA50/UC50 form, focus on the most severe descriptors. If you meet a 15-point descriptor on any activity, make this crystal clear. If substantial risk applies, state it explicitly: "I believe there would be a substantial risk to my mental health if I were found fit for work, because..." and explain the specific risks.
